Water For Your Future Baby
Are your pregnant and breastfeeding patients drinking enough?
Only a small proportion of women planning pregnancy follow government recommendations for nutrition and lifestyle. The nutritional status of the woman before and during gestation affects the growth of the foetus and the course of the pregnancy and is shown to influence the risk of obesity for both mother and infant.
Water is an essential yet overlooked nutrient
The role that good hydration plays in optimising health often takes second place to food nutrition advice despite noted effects of dehydration. A study by Lambert on nutrient intake across Europe reviewed 79 surveys in 23 countries and found no surveys at all giving information on fluid intake.
Encourage good hydration
Dehydration plays a role in: Water intake may reduce headache Headache caused by water deprivation is common. Tension-type headaches can often be helped simply by drinking enough water. Studies have also shown that being short on fluids can be a possible trigger for migraine. Given the extra fluid demands on breastfeeding mothers, remembering to maintain hydration is an essential part of keeping healthy and avoiding headache. Water can protect against urinary tract infections (UTIs). Pregnant women can be susceptible to UTIs. Getting rid of the bacteria that cause these infections is partly dependent on hydration.
